Taylormade P770 Review

I recently watched a video where golf Youtuber Rick Shiels tested the P770 irons. He admittedly surprised me when he said they were the “best-looking irons he had ever seen.” Naturally, I felt that we should conduct a TaylorMade P770 review to test Shiels’ claim.

In this post, we will look at the pros and cons of the P770’s to help you decide if they can add value to your game.

What To Consider Before Buying a Set Of Irons

Long Irons vs Hybrids

Those with slower swing speeds may find it challenging to launch long irons with strengthened lofts. Such as a 4-iron that features 19-degrees of loft. If you can relate to this problem, you may want to add hybrids to your bag as a substitute.

The average golfer finds it easier to launch higher, straighter shots with the more forgiving, offset hybrids.

Shaft Flex

The flex of your iron shafts is a factor that impacts the flight and spin of your ball. For example, an extra stiff shaft promotes lower ball flight with less spin. Conversely, a ladies flex delivers a higher ball flight with increased spin.

Golf magazine’s Zephyr Melton highlights the ideal swing speed to shaft flex ratio in this article. True Spec Golf gathered the data and determined that when you swing a 6-iron above 92 mph, an extra stiff shaft is better suited to your game.

Furthermore, those who swing a 6-iron between 65 and 75-mph may find that a senior’s flex gets the job done.

Forgiveness

All golfers could use some forgiveness in their game. However, the more forgiveness that your irons deliver, the harder it is to work your shots.

If you are after maximum forgiveness, then super game improvement irons are the way to go. However, superior golfers willing to sacrifice forgiveness for feel and workability may prefer to look at players distance irons or blades.

Workability

As single-figure handicappers, workability is a vital component to returning low scores. Being able to shape the ball helps you put yourself in more scoreable positions from anywhere on the course.

Muscle back irons give you the most freedom to work your shots, but they offer limited forgiveness. Super-game improvement irons deliver minimal shot shape but are highly forgiving.

Those of you looking for a balanced combination of workability and forgiveness may consider testing players distance irons.

TaylorMade P770 Irons Review

TaylorMade P770 Irons

Pros

    • Compact profile resembling players irons
    • Delivers increased distance
    • Buttery soft feel
    • Induces explosive ball speed
    • Promotes optimal shot workability

Cons

    • Reduced forgiveness
    • Slower swinging golfers may struggle to launch the strong lofted long irons

TaylorMade’s T7 family has forged a name as workable players irons, designed for the superior golfers among us. That was until the P790 range hit the market, and the focus shifted to distance and forgiveness. As a result, these irons featured a wider sole and a longer blade that reduced workability.

In 2020, TaylorMade applied their learnings from previous T7 models to release the P770 set. Furthermore, these irons featured the game-improvement technology of the P790’s and the compact profile and workability of the P7MC’s.

Features & Benefits

Compact Profile

TaylorMade realized that compacting the profile of the clubheads would make the P770’s attractive to mid and high handicappers.

The blades of these irons are shorter than the P790’s, and they feature a thinner topline for a slick appearance at address. Plus, they contain less offset to promote optimal workability for the superior players among us.

Speedfoam

To enhance the P770’s player iron characteristics, TaylorMade injected light urethane foam into the head. The foam enhances your feel to reduce unwanted vibrations on off-center strikes. And, it promotes explosive clubface speed.

Thru-Slot Speed Pocket

The P770’s include a flexible speed pocket, which increases the forgiveness of the irons on low-face shots. Even if you are a scratch handicap, you can benefit from a forgiving iron periodically.

Progressive Inverted Cone Technology

To ensure peak performance, TaylorMade employed their Progressive Inverted Cone Technology. That means that they constructed each iron face to deliver the optimal level of flight and spin. Plus, it helps maintain ball speed on mishits.

The above factors combine to deliver consistent distance, moderate forgiveness, and maximum workability.

Loft

When comparing the lofts of the TaylorMade P770 irons to the examples in this article by Golf Monthly’s Elliot Heath, we see that the longer irons in the set contain stronger lofts. Therefore, it may be more difficult for slower swinger golfers to launch consistently.

Workability

Although the P770’s do not offer the level of workability of the P7MC’s, it is still impressive. After, the minor loss in workability leads to a significant gain in forgiveness and consistency.

TaylorMade P770 Irons Alternatives

1. TaylorMade P7MC Irons

The TaylorMade P7MC irons offer an excellent alternative for superior golfers who seek maximum workability. Of course, that means that you will surrender a degree of forgiveness. But, the feel and playability of these irons make up for it.

The engineers forged the carbon steel material of the P7MC’s to deliver a compacted grain structure for a consistent, buttery-soft feel. Furthermore, the narrow sole of the clubs promotes consistent glide across the turf, enabling cleaner contact from any lie.

Although you enjoy reduced forgiveness from these irons, they feature a muscle-cavity back which is more forgiving than a traditional muscle back.

Overall, the TaylorMade P7MC irons are best suited to low handicap golfers looking to shape their shots from any position on the course. Given the reduced forgiveness, I advise mid to high handicappers to steer clear of these beauties.

2. Callaway Apex Pro

Callaway constructed their Apex Pro irons for those of us lucky enough to sport a low handicap. The forged feel, compact head shape, and narrow sole combine to deliver the look and feel of a players iron.

Added to the appearance and feel of these irons is their minimal offset to allow you to shape your shots for better control of your approach shots.

Callaway also employed artificial intelligence to optimize the C.O.R of each long and mid-iron to deliver accelerated ball speed and ideal spin across the face. Plus, the engineers added 90-grams of tungsten weight to promote consistent launch, ball flight, and distance.

The Callaway Apex Pro’s are not suited to the average golfer. As a result, low handicappers stand to gain more from adding them to the bag. The reason for this is the unforgiving nature of the irons and their compact profile.

3. Cobra King Forged Tec

The Cobra King Forged Tec irons offer low to mid handicappers players distance irons that combine to deliver a high launch and increase ball speed for maximum distance.

Cobra designed the irons to resemble the appearance of a classic muscle back. But they threw in a hollow core, which lowers the CG to produce higher ball flight with your long and mid irons.

Furthermore, the irons feature a PWRShell face which expands the sweet spot to induce explosive ball speed off the clubface, even on heel or toe mishits. Finally, every iron in the set carries a foam insert, which enhances the feel by eradicating vibrations of off-center strikes.

The only downside to these irons is the strong lofted long and mid-irons. That means that those of you with slower swing speeds may struggle to launch.

In conclusion, the Cobra King Forged Tec irons are ideal if you demand distance. However, fast swinging low to mid-handicappers stand to benefit the most from these irons.

Conclusion Of Our TaylorMade P770 Review

Besides the P790’s, the P7 series has predominantly focused on irons for superior golfers that demand workability and control over forgiveness. However, our TaylorMade P770 review has revealed that these golf irons suit a diverse range of golfers.

The P770 irons provide a combination of moderate forgiveness, explosive distance, and increased workability. As a result, low to mid-handicap players enjoy extra control and consistent yardage.

If you are a low to mid-handicapper looking for workable irons with moderate forgiveness, I will leave a link to the TaylorMade P770 irons here.
